I have visited both India and China. These countries are often lumped together, as being emerging super powers etc However in actually they are totally different societies. Which are in no way comparable, other than in the size of their populations.

I got back from India a while ago and was horrified. As soon as you get off the plane in New Delhi. You feel overwhelmed by a horrible smell. The air pollution in that country is so bad, that they have an absurdly high rate of lung disease.

Much of the country resembles an open sewer, with mounds of trash everywhere you go. I saw people squatting down and pooping in the street. Beggars and homeless people everywhere. Kids drinking water from rivers full of plastic.

Very dodgy looking street food, being served amidst swarms of flies. You have to be very careful about where you eat in India. As in many places the food will be unsafe. In fact the environment is so unsanitary, that it challenging to not get sick during a trip to India.

I did not witness this personally. However i have seen YouTube videos of dead bodies, floating around in the water off the coast of Mumbai. I also saw images of decomposing bodies on Indian beaches. Which were being eaten by stray dogs.

Though it is not fair to say that the whole country is a shit hole. Some Indian states are much nicer and cleaner than others. There are also some Indian people, who live well by anybodies standards. However life for the poor masses in India seems like hell on earth.

Whereas China's seems to be vastly more developed and civilised. Sure some of China's best and most modern cities. May be in no way representative of the whole of the country. There is still poverty in China and underdeveloped areas.

The standard of living in China is also clearly lower than in the West and places like Japan. I also noticed things like how you can't drink the tap water in China. However China still seems like a nice place to live and i saw nowhere in China that was anything like India. A Chinese guy once told me, about how he grew up in poverty.

He said that in the 1980's China was a horrible shit hole. At that point in time, China had a per capita income that was about equal to India. Which suggests that the Chinese were as poor as the Indians in the 1980's. Was China really like India back then?

I find that hard to believe. What was life like in that time period, and how have things improved? Was China really as bad as India is now? Do you think that India can be transformed, in the same way as China?
